I color code the layer to update purple to make it easy to find. Double-click the little thumbnail image on this layer to open.

3) This will open up the smart object as a separate file, where you can add your own artwork or pattern.

4) Make sure your artwork fills the entire space. Just pull the corners to resize, your artwork should remain the same height x width ratio.

5) When happy with the placement click: File > Save (Smart Object)

6) Go back into the original tab and you'll see that the smart object has been updated with your new design. Ta-da! You now have a stunning phone case design that's ready to upload to your store.
